It's not what the hardcore fans wanted, the scope just isn't there. But it's a solid game that can be fun if you don't care that it's not the Jagged Alliance the series so desperately deserves. It's downscaled significantly yet retains that certain Jagged Alliance feel. Just not in scope. The AI isn't very smart but neither was it in JA 2 and neither is it in most other games. Apparently programming AI is hard and always has been.Graphics are serviceable but nothing to write home to. Story is decent so far but no big surprises yet. But I'm still not too far in. I really appreciate the good voice acting and localization (German in my case). Quite a bit of budget went into that. The most significant change to the formula (aside from stripping it down to the essentials) are the Rage abilities. The more you kill/get hurt (as well as in some other instances) you gain adrenalin that gives you access to your mercenarie's rage abilities. These are abilities that do not cost Action Points. And if you play these sort of games, you know that alone is a big deal. The sniper gets an extra pot shot, the stealth merc can essentially teleport or "shadow walk" short distances without being seen (to get that melee stealth kill), the healer can heal and so on. I enjoy them for the most part but find them to be maybe a bit too powerful as well. Kind of still on the fence with these. For better or for worse, it gives this iteration it's own "thing". The Coop Multiplayer is really fun. Took me a while to get it to work because I ran into a weird bug but it works fine now. All in all a 6/10. Solid game but nothing special. Certainly not as bad as disgruntled and dissapointed long time fans will make you think it is. But it sure as hell ain't for everybody. I am happy with my purchase though so I'm giving it a thumbs up.. This is an excellent turn-based strategy game and a fine addition to the JA storyline. I've got almost 20 hours invested in the game and feel like I can safely say that "Rage" will satisfy the turn-based itch in any gamer. More than that, I think JA2 stalwarts who give this game the time-investment it deserves, will find that it has done real justice to the JA2 world. The combat is very solid. It's driven by action points (which any JA2 player will appreciate) and there's enough variety and depth to allow for tactical decisions that make a difference. The graphics and art style are appealing while the interface for combat is pretty functional and intuitive. The thing I always appreciate from a turn-based game is to feel like the more I play it, the better I get at applying its features - and that I can take the system and use it unorthodox ways. JA Rage offers that. With each combat, I feel like I am finding better and better ways to earn victory and to get out of sticky situations.Just like in JA2, you can spend action points to improve your aim, to throw stuff, for movement and to change your stance. There are also plenty of items to attach to your weapons (although I can't figure out how to remove them) and customizing your weapons load-out was always one of the great and robust features of JA2. "Rage" enough like JA2 and also enough like something new to strike a good balance for new players and for those of us who have been playing JA2 for almost 20 years and waiting for a good follow up.The stealth component in "Rage" is an improvement over JA2. You can really use stealth to great advantage to thin out a battlefield before the alarm is raised. The story develops slowly and holds rewards for long-time JA players. THere's plaenty of nods and winks to the beloved JA2 story and the mercenaries of AIM. I'm thorooughly enjoying the encounters and the way your party grows and interacts. It's also a lot of fun to be playing the marcs now that they've aged and developed some flaws and bad habits. I feel a smile on my face all too often as the game moves along. The inventory system is where this game needs work. It's too difficult and finiky to move items between your mercs. They could also do with a better way to pick up items after a battle ends. The need to loot each individual container and body without going into a real-time mode feels very primitive in its design functionality. It's the kind of problem that I think can be addressed with future patches, so I look forward to the developers listening to the players suggestions I've seen in the discussions. And why do weapons degrade so quickly? I can have a perfectly finctional M16 at the start of a fire fight and it all but falls apart by the time the skirmish is 3/4 over. In my opinion, this needs tweaking. The only other thing I don't like about the game is this need to manage water. I mean, why do we need to worry about how thirsty the characters are? It seems trivial and even unrealistic that dehydration could possibly set in so quickly. I think the developers were trying to insert some kind of resource management but "thirst"? I dunno about that.In summation, I'd say that Jagged Alliance Rage! is an excellent game with a couple of rough edges but it shines in all the most important areas. (potential spoiler here) Oh, and JA2 fans. just wait until you see who the villain is!!! I almost fell out of my chair.. I'm a vet of JA series, played Rage quite a bit, and have to admit that this game is not bad at all, though I advice u to treat it not like a successor of JA2, but like a Silent Storm-style spin-off of JA series. Than u may like it too.. Fun co-op experince. Alot more personality than I expected. This is fun for what it is, even with the reduced roster of mercs.. The name of this game is an insult to the original Jagged Alliance.R.I.P.. Not intended for replayability. Not a lot of combat options, just weapons and innate character abilities.
